>> World Education Market 2002 in Lisbon, Portugal
iMOVE together with GATE Germany organised the joint German stand at the World Education Market (WEM) in Lisbon in May 2002 within the framework of the Joint Initiative “International Marketing for the Promotion of Study, Research and Training in Germany”.
The WEM is a combination of trade fair and conference which is solely aimed at a professional international audience. The objective of the WEM is to bring the private and public sectors together in order to compare experience, find partners, establish business connections and to obtain information on current topics and trends in international training markets.
On the whole, the WEM has a multi-sector focus, offering decision-makers at colleges and universities, government ministries, the area of initial and continuing vocational training, the media and the telecommunications industry an international forum unique of its kind in the world.
The staging organisation for the WEM is Reed Midem Organisation S.A., a French company which has been making a name for itself in organising major international media trade fairs for several years now.

According to experts, there is still a shortage of market information and data in many countries. The WEM offers a good platform for an international exchange of information to counteract this.
A total of around 2,000 participants from 71 countries took part in WEM 2002, including 400 exhibitors. After the first two events took place in Vancouver, Canada (2000, 2001), the WEM moved to Europe for the first time in 2002. Lisbon was also the site of WEM 2003. (You can find information on the World Education Market 2003, which took place May 20-23, 2003, here.)

The German stand, encompassing 200 square meters, was the third largest stand at WEM 2002 after the Canadian and Nigerian stands. DAAD (with eight universities and colleges), iMOVE, with nine training providers and BIBB were represented at the stand.
The following providers took part along with iMOVE:
BIBB, Bosch Rexroth AG, Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft e.V. (at present InWEnt), Fraunhofer Institut Software- und Systemtechnik (ISST), Ingenatic GmbH, Know How! AG, Lucas-Nülle Lehr- und Messgeräte GmbH,
RAG Bildung GmbH and Siemens Professional Education - Technik Akademie Berlin.
Sabine Gummersbach-Majoroh (iMOVE) engaged in a discussion with a Nigerian delegation.
A cocktail reception took place at the German stand the afternoon of the first day of the trade fair (May 22, 2002), with the cultural attaché of the German embassy in Lisbon, Mr. DuCoffre, giving the welcoming address. There was a large number of guests at the reception, offering numerous opportunities for interesting discussions.
A presentation of the current state of the art in e-learning models in the field of initial and continuing vocational training in Germany was made within the framework of a hosted series of lectures at the workshop organised by iMOVE on the third day of the event, entitled “Challenge Lifelong learning – experiences and solutions from Germany” (you can find the programme here).
The workshop was attended by a large number of people, which must be seen as a major success given the uncommonly long duration of the workshop compared to other events at the WEM (3:15 to 6:00 p.m.). A total of 54 persons from 23 countries took part in the event. At the reception which followed, there was an opportunity to intensify contacts and to expand collaboration. All the visitors at the workshop received a CD containing the presentations of the training institutions taking part in the fair as well as additional information on iMOVE.
From the perspective of iMOVE, the scale of attendance at WEM 2002 must be rated a success. All nine participating organisations expressed their satisfaction with the number of visitors and especially the excellent quality of the new international contacts which were established. As a result of the positive feedback from providers of continuing training, iMOVE has decided to participate in the WEM 2003 with a stand as well.
